Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not….. Thomas Henry Huxley

This time of year

It is getting to be that time of year when posts on the forum boards I visit fill with vent-posts.   I’m sure you’ve read them….’oh no, the ILS are coming!  How do I manage to stay sane while they are here?’  Or the  ‘SIL has asked me to bring this and that and this and that…. but it isn’t what I want to bring….’ Don’t get me wrong I’ve had Thanksgivings’ where I was concerned about who we had chosen (or who had chosen us) to be with.  There were years upon years where SIL and her family stopped by for a visit on their drive to her DH family home.  They would eat before they arrived but we never knew exactly when they would show up.  How do you plan your meal around that?  There were years where we had some family visit us or we traveled to their home.   We stopped the charade.

Reading these posts though helped me to remember those days and how very thankful I am for these days.  We have no grandparents to go over the river and through the woods to.   We have no in-laws who are asking to visit or that we ask to visit.    If they were closer I might consider joining them for Thanksgiving at their home or ours, but my SILs are busy with their families so we have all journeyed on our separate paths.  We meet sometimes in the summer if our paths come close to the others home.  We enjoy each others company but don’t seek it during the holidays.  It works.   Our one invitation to one of my relatives home was easily turned down.  It would have meant a 3+hr drive there and then back again, on Thanksgiving Day.  It  would have put us with folks who have strong views against homeschooling, and frankly I am not interested in defending our decision to homeschool, rehashing that my boys are socialized and receiving the education we wish for them.  Hearing tales about how ill-prepared homeschoolers are for the world,  blah, blah, blah…….

I am thankful it will be the four of us.  I will admit though that I have been racking my brain, trying to come up with others in our community who could join us however they have family to be with or are driving across the country to be with family.   So internet friends, if you find yourself in this neck of the woods, stop on by!   We’ll start with clam chowder and then move on to turkey, filling, cranberry sauce, chicken noodles, creamed onions, cole slaw, candied sweet potato, pumpkin pie, apple pie, Kahlua cream pie, and my favorite, cherry pie.  Everything is made from scratch.  ummmmm  We will be watching football, playing some card games and taking the dogs for a walk so we can make room for second dessert.
