Speed Skating Update

I feel the need to write about something fun, something uplifting, so I’ll not share how the remodeling work is not progressing, nor about noisy testing sites, and ear infections, and……well, off to a better subject.

I shared that last Thursday Mark’s new inline speed skates came in, thanks to some hard work by Tim at Weber Inline Speed Skates.  They arrived just in time because on Sunday the boys,  with their team, had their first indoor skate meet.  At the god-awful hour of 2:30 am Sunday morning (no the sun was not up but the moon was beautiful and full) we rose, and left the driveway at 2:50am.   Skating began at 5:30am, in Harrisburg, and the boys were so excited to be there, to be around all those other skaters, racing around the track.

They were each in four races, 2 novice division and 2 standard division.  They spoke of winning their race, and we spoke to them about just staying upright in the race and not falling.  It is far too easy to wipe out in this sport, to slide across the floor, to run into a skater who is in the process of sliding across the floor….Yes, this sport is not for the nervous or worry-wart mom.   Skinned knees are a common site.  I just wanted them to finish their races but they wanted more.

Mark finished his four races and in one race passed some other boys and came in fourth place.   Twice Michael came in fourth place and once he looked like he was going to take second place but a more-seasoned racer used him and sped past him near the end.  Still, he finished in a very respectable 3rd place.  Both boys exceeded our goals.

Oh, and those new skates, worked wonderfully.  The boys love this sport and it shows.   Several times a day I’ll hear one or the other say, ‘let’s go skate around the block.’  followed by a ‘Mom, can we take a break from school and go skate.’   I always say yes, one of those little perks of hs’ing, and relish the idea that they enjoy the sport, have someone to skate with, and that they are building a life-long bond with each other.  What a treasure they have and it brings me much joy watching them skate, together.
