Our First Speed Skate Meet
A while back I mentioned that ScienceKid had joined an in-line speed skating team. It took a few weeks befor MilitaryKid joined the team and a few more before he became hooked, but they both look forward to the practices even though they are very early Sunday morning.
Today we traveled close to Atlantic City, NJ, to watch a League Meet. We arrived at 5:30am — note to readers—this is after our FULL Science Olympiad day on Saturday, and after our very FULL week preparing for Science Olympiad, yes, I run on fumes sometimes—-and it was a 90 min drive from our home! I actually got out of bed at 3:30am, washed my hair in cold water, took the dogs out, and gathered the boys for the ride down. They slept, lucky kids!
The place was packed with skaters. At 5:30am! Packed. With little tots scream’in their way around the track, and teenagers, and young adults and old folks too. Sorry, I can say that since I’m their age. We watched race after race, watched a few folks fall, and chatted with our coaches., and saw a few more folks fall. Ouch. The floor often delivers a very nasty rug burn but these folks all got right back up and finished their race. Always. The hours went by before there was a major fall, first one lady and then Brenda, who practices with our team most every Sunday hit the same spot, her feet went into the air and her head went down crashing into the floor, splitting her chin, and driving a tooth into the roof of her mouth. These folks fly around the floor going 20 or 25mph. The medics were called in, and she was taken off to the hospital. Word came back that the CAT scan was OK but what a very scary time for all. We watched a bit longer before heading home. What an image though we have in our minds now of what can happen. I think SK had, but I doubt MK had really thought of what an injury might encompass.
They want to go back though.
